What makes the Wymärt special

Small, fine and friendly, that is how the organiser describes the Wymärt. It takes place twice a year, in spring and autumn, and according to the organiser has become a fixture of Basel's wine life over the past fifteen years. The organiser also calls it one of the most affordable wine events in all of Switzerland.

Here the people behind the wines are at the stands themselves, winemakers as well as merchants. So you can ask how a wine was made and order directly. The former organic wine days have been merged into the Wymärt, which is why the brochure promises a large selection of organic wines.

Then there is the venue. According to the organiser, the Alte Markthalle next to the SBB station is all about eating and drinking, with street food from around the world. So before or after the tasting you can head straight off on a culinary trip around the world.

Who is pouring

The exhibitor list includes 28 producers and 20 merchants. French-speaking Switzerland stands out. Almost half of the producers come from Valais, Vaud, Geneva and Neuchâtel, for example from Salgesch, Fully, Lutry, Yvorne or Aigle. So if you want to taste wines from western Switzerland straight from the winemaker, you do not have to travel there.

From the region there are estates from Ormalingen, Sissach and Riehen, one from Vairano in Ticino, plus Uerikon on Lake Zurich and Walenstadt. Across the border it goes to Baden with Denzlingen and Weil, and there are also wines from France, from Italy with Piedmont and Sicily, from Portugal and even from Mendoza in Argentina. The full list is on basler-wymaert.ch.

Tips for your visit

First ask your winemaker or wine shop for an invitation card. The exhibitors send them to their customers, and then the Wymärt costs you nothing.

Come by public transport. The Markthalle is right next to the SBB station, and if you are tasting you will leave the car at home anyway.

Look at the exhibitor list beforehand and pick a few stands. The brochure has a floor plan showing who is in which room. And plan a street food break, so your nose is still fresh at the last stand.
