Basler Personenschifffahrt traces back to engineer Rudolf Gelpke, who founded the shipping company as a cooperative in 1924. It has sailed as an independent public company since 1968 and in 2025 marked its centenary on the Rhine under the motto "Syt 100 Joor uff em Rhy" (100 years on the Rhine). Once a year its flagship, the MS Rhystärn, becomes a stage for wine: at the Wyschiff, organised by the Wyschiff Schweizer Winzer association, around 30 self-vinifying estates from across Switzerland present some 300 wines directly to visitors, with no middleman. The 23rd edition runs from 4 to 7 March 2027, turning the Rhystärn into a floating meeting point for wine lovers for a few days.
